At Maugers, we have always felt that if you choose to eat meat, you should choose the best possible quality from a source you know. Our business began over fifty years ago with the first butchery opened by Joe Mauger in 1972. Now in our third generation, we have two butcheries in Bowral and Moss Vale, an online shop and we proudly supply our locally grown meat to numerous establishments across the Highlands.
In a world where impersonal supermarkets dominate, exploiting producers to sell for less and dictate what we can buy, there’s something uniquely comforting about walking into your local, family owned butcher shop.
The traditional butcher shop is more than just a place to buy meat, it is a place of craftsmanship and community – where customers receive personal service from a skilled professional. We often use the phrase ‘know your butcher’ and the meaning behind this is trust. Having a relationship with your butcher means we come to know our customers tastes and preferences, we can offer advice on the right cut for an occasion or cooking style, which often leads to a better outcome and in many cases savings for our customers.
Craftsmanship & Quality
We take pride in our traditional craft which we believe is as relevant today as it was hundreds of years ago. There’s a rich history of craftsmanship in what we do, passed down through the generations and on to each of the apprentices that begin their career with us. The pride in our work can be seen in how we approach every task, from breaking down sides of beef into individual cuts, to the care we take in hand making our sausages and speciality small goods. Our well stocked cabinets and pantry, along with the personal service our customers receive at the counter is hallmark of the traditional butcher shop experience at Maugers Meats.
With skills honed through years of experience and our commitment to local producers, whose approach to sustainability and animal welfare are in line with our own, we can ensure every one of our products are of the highest possible quality.
Staying true to our origins
Our longevity and growth as a business is a testament to our core values and staying true to who we are; a local, family-owned business producing the best meat that the Southern Highlands has to offer.
Beef and Lamb is produced on our farm just outside Robertson, 100% grass fed and raised using ethical and sustainable farming practices. Chicken and Pork is sourced from selected NSW farmers with whom we have long-term relationships. These close ties mean we have control of the whole process from beginning to end, ensuring an exceptional product in both quality and taste.
Preserving tradition
Trust and integrity are at the heart of our business and customers come to us for the quality, consistency and service we provide. In a world where convenience can often beat quality, taking the time to visit your local butcher shop and know your butcher can be a welcome reminder of the importance craftsmanship, healthier food choices and community. So, whether you leave our shop with a prime cut of steak for a special meal, one of our hand curated meat boxes or you’ve simply shopped for the week ahead, we hope you feel part of our story and the traditional butcher shop experience that we are proud to offer.
